Beschrijving voorzijde Central field dominated by a plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quadrants, enclosed within a raised inner circle. Above the inner circle, a crude crowned royal figure or crown motif is rendered in low relief in the Viking-influenced style typical of early Norwegian medieval coinage. The coin exhibits the irregular flan and hand-struck characteristics consistent with hammered silver production of the early twelfth century. The overall design is bold and schematic, reflecting the Anglo-Saxon numismatic influence prevalent in Scandinavian penny coinage of the period.

Aanvullende informatie

Olav Magnusson became king of Norway at roughly ten years old and died at around seventeen, leaving one of the shortest adult reigns in Norwegian history. His coinage, struck during the fractious post-Hardrada reorganization of Norwegian royal minting, survives in extremely small numbers. The Skaare 63 attribution places this among the more precisely documented types from his reign, which is itself notable given how poorly the numismatic record of early twelfth-century Norway is preserved.
