Olav Haraldsson — later canonized as Saint Olav — introduced coinage to Norway largely as a political act, modeling his issues on contemporary Anglo-Saxon penny types at a moment when he was actively consolidating royal authority against regional chieftains. English moneyers were almost certainly involved in production, consistent with the strong Anglo-Scandinavian ties of the period. Whether this piece actually circulated as currency in any modern sense remains debated; gift exchange and prestige display likely drove much of its use.
The AAJT reference places this among the earliest documented Norwegian coins, predating any established domestic mint infrastructure.
