Obverse description Crude laureate and draped bust of King José I facing right, occupying the central field. The legend IOSEPH.I.R.P. arcs above and around the bust, with the date below, all within a beaded border. The portrait is rendered in the rough, provincial hammered style characteristic of the Goa mint, with visible irregularities in the flan. The abbreviation R.P. stands for Rei de Portugal (King of Portugal).
