| Obverse description | Armored bust of Nicolò Ludovisi, Prince of Piombino, facing left, wearing a crown and a ruffled collar, with elaborate plate armor visible at the shoulder and chest. The effigy is rendered in a bold, slightly crude hammered style typical of minor Italian principality coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, with the date numeral 43 (for 1643) incorporated into the inscription. The flan is irregular and slightly off-center, characteristic of hand-struck production. |
