Sailana was among the smallest of the Rajputana princely states, covering barely 300 square miles in what is now Madhya Pradesh. Its rulers maintained the right to issue copper coinage — a privilege jealously guarded even by minor chiefs as a mark of sovereignty distinct from British suzerainty. The long attribution window of 1850–1898 reflects the difficulty of dating undated issues from small native states, where dies were often reused across decades without modification.
