The Nawabdom of Carnatic by the 1760s was effectively a client state of the English East India Company, its rulers politically neutered following decades of succession disputes and the aftermath of the Carnatic Wars. Small copper fractions like this were the Company's least concern — local minting continued largely on its own inertia, with minimal oversight, which accounts for the considerable variation in weight and fabric found across surviving examples of this type.
