The Natura series launched in 1994 as South Africa's answer to the Krugerrand's dominance of the bullion market — a fine gold collector issue built around annual wildlife themes rather than the single-minded repetition of Paul Kruger's profile. The sable antelope had been depicted in the 1997 four-coin Natura set as well, making this 2000 half-ounce issue part of a deliberate revisitation rather than a first appearance for the species.
Mintages across the Natura program were kept deliberately low, and the half-ounce denomination consistently attracted the smallest production runs within each year's release.
