The Natura series launched in 1994 as South Africa's fine gold alternative to the Krugerrand, deliberately targeting collectors rather than bullion investors by adopting .9999 purity and annual wildlife themes. The 1998 leopard issue was part of the Big Five sub-series that ran through the mid-to-late 1990s, with mintages kept intentionally low — typically a few thousand pieces per denomination — to sustain secondary market premiums. The half-ounce denomination in particular was produced in smaller numbers than the full ounce across most Natura years.
