The Libertad series launched in 1981 as Mexico's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf, giving the mint a bullion vehicle tied explicitly to national gold reserves rather than a fixed face value — a deliberate insulation against the peso devaluations that had repeatedly undermined confidence in Mexican currency through the late 1970s and 1980s. The half-ounce denomination was added to the lineup in 1982.
Mintages for the gold Libertads are strikingly low by bullion standards, with some years in the 2000–2021 window seeing fewer than 1,500 pieces struck across all gold denominations combined, making secondary-market premiums on certain dates entirely disconnected from spot price.
