Israel's annual Hanukkah coin series, running since 1958, dedicates each year's issue to a Hanukkiah from a different Jewish diaspora tradition. The Dutch lamp referenced here reflects the distinctive oil lamp forms used in 17th and 18th century Amsterdam, where Sephardic Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula established one of the most prosperous and culturally productive Jewish communities in Europe.
