Issued to mark the centenary of Edmond de Rothschild's sustained financial backing of early Jewish agricultural settlements in Ottoman Palestine — the moshavot — this coin commemorates a man the settlers called "HaNadiv HaYaduah," the Well-Known Benefactor. Rothschild spent an estimated 6 million francs supporting colonies like Rishon LeZion and Zikhron Ya'akov before transferring administration to the Jewish Colonization Association in 1900, effectively withdrawing from direct management after years of paternalistic friction with the colonists themselves.
