Ranjit Singh never appeared on his own coinage — a deliberate political choice rooted in Sikh religious principles against idolatry. The Amritsar mint, operating under the nominal invocation of Guru Nanak and the Khalsa, issued gold in the name of that spiritual authority rather than the maharaja himself. This makes the attribution of any specific Sikh Empire gold issue to a single year deeply uncertain; the mint continued using the same frozen regnal year across multiple decades of actual production.
The 1820 date here reflects numismatic convention rather than a guaranteed striking year. Amritsar half mohurs from this period circulated actively in Punjab's substantial cross-regional trade economy, where gold weight mattered more than the issuing face.
