Obverse description Crowned Portuguese royal arms displayed in the centre of the coin field, featuring the traditional escutcheon of five bezants arranged in a cross (quinas) surrounded by a bordure of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate foliate form. The denomination numeral 2000 (réis) appears to the left of the shield in the field. The circular Latin legend reads IOANNES V D G PORT ET ALG REX, identifying King João V by the grace of God as King of Portugal and the Algarves. The coin is struck on a well-prepared flan with milled edge and exhibits the characteristic baroque style of early eighteenth-century Portuguese gold coinage.
