Obverse description The obverse field is entirely occupied by a bold, densely composed Arabic legend executed in flowing nasta'liq calligraphy, filling the flan from center to periphery. The central inscription bears the royal titulature of Shah Tahmasb I, reading in part 'al-Sultan al-'Adil al-Kamil al-Hadi al-Wali Abu al-Muzaffar Shah Tahmasb Bahadur Khan.' The mint name Sabzawar and the AH regnal year 958 appear in the lower portion of the field. The irregular, slightly uneven flan is characteristic of Safavid hammered gold coinage, with the legend partially running off the edge at several points. The overall style reflects the ornate epigraphic tradition of sixteenth-century Persian Islamic numismatics.
