Obverse description Obverse field bears the Shi'a declaration of faith (shahada) rendered in elegant thuluth calligraphy arranged in three horizontal lines within a circular border. The central legend reads 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah / Ali wali Allah' (There is no god but God / Muhammad is the Messenger of God / Ali is the Friend of God), affirming the Twelver Shi'a creed that was the doctrinal hallmark of Safavid coinage. The inscription is framed by a continuous floral or scrollwork border encircling the field. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the period. No mint or date appears on this face.
