The 3rd Coinage of Charles I was authorized in 1636, part of a broader attempt to rationalize Scottish currency as Charles pressed his unpopular fiscal and ecclesiastical reforms on a kingdom he had not visited since his coronation there in 1633. Within two years, the Prayer Book riots of 1637 and the subsequent National Covenant of 1638 had made Edinburgh effectively hostile territory for the Crown. Coins of this issue were being struck almost in parallel with the collapse of Charles's authority in Scotland.
Spink 5573 is specifically the 1st Issue of the 3rd Coinage, distinguished from later issues by its thistle mintmark.
