Witkowo is a small town in the Gniezno district of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), and this note was issued by its county authority — the Wydział Powiatowy — during the administrative chaos following the Greater Poland Uprising of late December 1918. As German marks remained the de facto currency during the transition period before Polish monetary unification, local governments across the region issued their own small-denomination emergency scrip to address acute shortages of low-value coin. The Witkowo half-marka sits squarely in that tradition.
County-level issues from this uprising period are among the least documented Polish notgeld, with print runs unrecorded and surviving quantities largely unknown.
