In 1900, the Imperial German mint experimented with a revised small-shield reverse for the half Mark denomination — this piece is a pattern struck from that revision process, never approved for circulation. The standard small-shield type had already faced criticism for legibility at scale, and trials like this one document the back-and-forth between the Reich treasury and the Berlin mint over minor design refinements that ultimately went nowhere.
