Memmingen's municipal administration issued this Notgeld note during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the early postwar years, when hoarding and metal scarcity stripped small denominations from everyday commerce. Hundreds of German towns issued their own fractional paper in this period, but the quality varied enormously — Gebrüder Parcus of Munich was among the more technically reliable printers handling municipal commissions, and their work for Swabian communities tends to show better registration and ink consistency than notes from smaller regional printers.
The DeNG 5/6#31.1c designation indicates a catalogued variety within the Memmingen series, suggesting at least minor printing or paper differences from related issues.
