Lübeck's minting rights in the sixteenth century were a point of fierce civic pride and practical necessity — the city's position as the dominant power within the Hanseatic League demanded a credible independent coinage. By 1549 that dominance was already fraying, with Hamburg and Bremen asserting greater commercial independence, but Lübeck's mint continued producing silver fractions that circulated widely across the Baltic trade network.
The Jesse#549 attribution places this among the more precisely documented Lübeck silver issues of the period, cross-referenced against Behr's earlier die studies.
