Portugal's colonial copper supply to Angola was chronically mismanaged throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, leaving the territory perpetually short of small denomination coinage. Rather than strike new pieces, Lisbon authorized countermarking existing circulating copper — here a Maria I quarter macuta elevated to half macuta status under Maria II's 1837 revalidation decree. The countermark simultaneously doubled the face value and re-legitimized coins that had been circulating informally well past their intended monetary lifespan.
The crowned shield punch was applied at Luanda. Alignment varies considerably across surviving examples.
