Reverse description Reverse of the host coin (KM#29, 1/4 Macuta, Maria I) displaying the denomination 'MACUTA 1/4' and date '1789' within a beaded inner border, surrounded by the circular legend 'AFRICA·PORTUGUEZA', with floral ornaments decorating the inner field. Prominently applied at center is the 1837 countermark of Queen Maria II: a crowned Portuguese shield, struck in accordance with the Royal Edict of 21 March 1837, which doubled the face value of the host coin from 1/4 to 1/2 Macuta. The countermark is boldly impressed and clearly legible, depicting the Portuguese coat of arms surmounted by a royal crown.
