Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms at center, comprising a quartered shield bearing the traditional quinas (five escutcheons) and castles, encircled by an armillary sphere — emblematic of Portuguese maritime exploration. A royal crown surmounts the shield, rendered in fine relief. The circular legend reads MARIA·I·D·G·REGINAE·PORT·ET·D·GUINEÆ·, identifying Queen Maria I by the grace of God as Queen of Portugal and Lady of Guinea. The devices are set within a beaded border, characteristic of late 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage.
