Beschrijving keerzijde Full-length standing figure of Saint Zeno, patron and protector of Verona, depicted frontally wearing episcopal vestments and a mitre, raising his right hand in benediction and holding a long crozier or staff in his left hand. The saint stands in the central field, with the Latin legend S. ZENO PROTEC VERONAE distributed around the periphery within a beaded or rope border. The composition is characteristic of Veronese civic coinage of the Maximilian period, invoking the city's saintly protector.

Aanvullende informatie

Verona's brief period under Maximilian I of Habsburg followed the League of Cambrai's dismemberment of Venetian terraferma holdings in 1509. The city passed to imperial control after Venice's catastrophic defeat at Agnadello, and local coinage was issued acknowledging Habsburg authority for the duration of Maximilian's effective hold on the region — which ended when Venice gradually recovered its mainland territories before his death in 1519.

CNI VI#13 is among the scarcer city issues from this transitional window, minted by a civic authority navigating between two powerful overlords within the span of a single decade.
