The five-bank consortium that signed this note — plus the Caja de Ahorros de Lima — was assembled under emergency conditions after the outbreak of war in Europe in August 1914 triggered a gold hoarding crisis in Peru. The Peruvian government, unable to force specie payments, authorized this joint circular check arrangement under Laws 1968 and 1982 as a stopgap convertibility mechanism, pooling the backing obligations across institutions rather than placing the burden on any single bank.
ABNC in New York produced the plates with characteristic speed and precision. The half-libra denomination was the smallest in the series, aimed squarely at daily transactional use during a moment when gold coin had effectively vanished from circulation.
