The surrounding legend DOMINVS MIHI ADIVTOR runs along the coin's periphery. The overall composition is bold and well-centered relative to the irregular flan, consistent with hammered Brabant copper coinage of the late sixteenth century. |

The gigot was among the lowest-denomination coins in circulation in the Spanish Netherlands, and by the late 1580s Antwerp had already suffered its most catastrophic blow — the Spanish Fury of 1576 and the subsequent fall of the city to Parma in 1585 had gutted its commercial dominance. Copper small change continued to be struck there largely out of administrative inertia, supplying a population that had shrunk dramatically as Protestant merchants and artisans fled north to Holland and Zeeland.
The Witte 843 attribution places this squarely within a well-documented but short-lived emission under Philip II's Brabant authority, struck across just three years before the denomination was reorganized.
