The pendant jewel of the Golden Fleece hangs from the lower arm of the cross. The "Gigot des États" issues were struck under the authority of the States-General of Brabant during the early phase of the Dutch Revolt, when the provincial estates briefly seized control of coinage from Spanish Habsburg administration. The nickname "gigot" — a leg of mutton — is a contemporary folk reference whose exact origin is debated, but it stuck firmly enough to define the entire type in numismatic literature.
These were emergency issues, hurriedly produced to fund military resistance. The Antwerp mint was the principal striking facility during this window before the Duke of Parma's reconquest progressively shut down rebel coinage operations in the southern provinces after 1585.
