Albert and Isabella's joint rule over the Spanish Netherlands from 1598 required a fresh coinage to legitimize their authority in the southern provinces, and the small copper fractions — the gigots — were the workhorses of daily exchange in Brabant's markets. The 's-Hertogenbosch mint was one of several authorized to strike this type across the archduchy, each mint operating under its own mintmaster whose mark distinguishes the local product.
Vanhoudt 602 places this emission within a tight four-year window, during which the Twelve Years' Truce had not yet been signed — fighting with the Dutch Republic continued through this entire period of production.
