Christopher of Manderscheid ruled Stavelot-Malmedy as prince-abbot from 1571 to 1575, a tenure cut short by his death and marked by the financial pressures common to small Imperial abbeys squeezed between larger territorial powers in the Spanish Netherlands. Small copper fractional issues like this one were struck to address chronic shortages of low-denomination circulating coin in the region — a persistent problem that the great mints of the Low Countries consistently underserved.
