Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King James I facing left, wearing a laurel wreath and mantle with a ruffled collar visible at the neck. A Roman numeral X appears to the right of the bust, denoting the denomination in shillings. The effigy is rendered in the bold, slightly stylised manner characteristic of early Stuart hammered coinage. The circumferential Latin legend is separated from the central design by an inner beaded border, with a star stop visible at the top of the field.

Reverse description Crowned quartered shield of arms occupying the central field, displaying the arms of England (three passant guardant lions) in the first and fourth quarters, France (three fleurs-de-lis) in the second quarter, Scotland (rampant lion within a double tressure) in the third quarter, and Ireland (harp) in a subordinate escutcheon, consistent with the Stuart royal achievement. The shield is surmounted by a large ornate royal crown. The whole is enclosed within an inner beaded border, with the circumferential Latin legend divided by pellet stops and a six-pointed star, reading continuously around the coin.
