The inscription reads 'Sultan of the land and the sea, year 1240' (AH), referencing the Hijri dating system employed on Maldivian coinage of this reign. The calligraphy is rendered in a rough, hand-engraved style consistent with locally produced Islamic hammered coinage. A horizontal dividing line separates the date from the upper portion of the legend.
