Frederik III came to power in 1648 as a monarch with sharply curtailed authority under the nobility-dominated Council of the Realm. That changed decisively in 1660, when a financial crisis following the disastrous wars with Sweden gave Frederik the opening to engineer a coup by the estates — resulting in the Act of Hereditary Succession and, in 1665, the Kongeloven, or King's Law, which established one of the most absolute monarchies in European history. The coinage of 1665–1667 was struck under that newly unchecked royal authority.
The "Year in legend" designation distinguishes this type from related half-krone issues where the date appears in the exergue.
