Max Gandolf von Kuenburg governed Salzburg from 1668 until his death in 1687, a tenure marked by aggressive Counter-Reformation enforcement that culminated in the expulsion of Protestant miners and salt workers from the region. The archbishopric's coinage during his rule was prolific across denominations, but these fractional silver pieces were struck primarily for local alms distribution and small market transactions in a city whose economy ran heavily on salt extraction and trade along the Salzach.
