Baden's copper fractional coinage of the 1820s was produced primarily to address chronic small-change shortages across the German southwest, a persistent problem in the fragmented monetary landscape of the pre-Zollverein states. Louis I had come to the throne in 1818 following the death of his childless elder brother Charles, inheriting a grand duchy that was already experimenting with currency rationalization ahead of any formal regional agreement.
