Frederick of Hesse-Darmstadt was appointed Prince-Bishop of Breslau in 1671 through heavy Habsburg pressure, despite being only in minor orders at the time — a politically motivated appointment that kept the strategically vital Silesian see firmly within the Catholic imperial orbit. His coinage is scarce partly because his tenure ended with his death in 1682, leaving fewer than a dozen years of issues across all denominations.
The Bishopric's small silver fractions from this period circulated alongside Silesian municipal and ducal issues, making attribution in worn condition genuinely difficult without die reference.
