Obverse description Within an oval baroque cartouche, the Hessian lion rampant to the left; the date is divided across the upper field flanking the arms, with a cardinal's hat surmounting the shield at top. A smaller oval below the shield bears the denomination expressed as '1/2'. The mint mark 'LPH' appears in the field. The overall design reflects the ecclesiastical character of the issuing authority under Bishop Frederick of Hesse-Darmstadt.
