Charles II Louis Frederick — better known as Karl Friedrich's grandson Karl Ludwig Friedrich — ruled Baden during the turbulent post-Napoleonic reorganization, when the Confederation of the Rhine collapsed and Baden scrambled to reestablish its monetary footing. Small copper fractions like this were struck specifically to address the chronic shortage of low-denomination coinage that had plagued the region throughout the French occupation years, when Baden's own minting operations had been severely disrupted.
