Obverse description The arms of the City of Bern displayed within a plain shield: a bear passant to sinister on a horizontally divided field, set within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend MONETA ▾ BERNENSIS ▾ runs between the inner circle and the milled border, rendered in upright Latin capitals separated by ornamental stops. The engraving is bold and precise, characteristic of Swiss municipal coinage of the early eighteenth century.
