Kutch retained the right to strike its own coinage under British paramountcy through a series of treaty arrangements that left the state's mint at Bhuj unusually active well into the twentieth century. Khengarji III, who ruled from 1876 to 1942, navigated those colonial constraints carefully — British India required that the reigning imperial sovereign appear on locally issued coinage, hence George V's presence here alongside the Maharao's own name.
The fractional kori denominations saw genuine local circulation in Kutch's coastal trading economy, where the kori system persisted long after neighboring regions had been absorbed into standard British Indian currency.
