Additional information

Issued to mark the 1981 wedding of Crown Prince Tupouto'a, this is one of several commemorative silver pieces Tonga produced through the late 1970s and early 1980s under an aggressive program of proof coinage aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Taufa'ahau Tupou IV issues from this period were packaged and distributed almost exclusively through overseas coin dealers and Franklin Mint-style subscription schemes.

Virtually none entered circulation in Tonga itself.
