Louis II's reign coincided with Bavaria's absorption into the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, and this half-gulden type was rendered obsolete almost immediately by the introduction of the imperial mark system in 1871. The South German gulden states — Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, and Frankfurt — had maintained their own monetary union since 1837, and its dissolution was as much a political capitulation as an economic one.
KM#882 pieces dated 1871 had the shortest window of legal currency life of any in the series.
