| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen facing left, rendered in high relief with finely engraved curly hair and sideburns. The truncation is plain and unadorned. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading BERNHARD HERZOG ZU SACHSEN MEININGEN. The engraver's name HELFRICHT appears in small capitals at the base of the bust truncation. The field is smooth, framed by a fine toothed border. |

| Additional information |
Bernhard II ruled Saxe-Meiningen from 1803 until his death in 1866, making him one of the longer-reigning of the Ernestine dukes. This issue dates to the tail end of the German silver coinage reform that followed the Dresden Mint Convention of 1838, which standardized weights and fineness across the participating states of the German Customs Union. Saxe-Meiningen's compliance was not instant — the duchy took several years to fully align its fractional silver to the new Convention standards.
Struck at the Hildburghausen or Saalfeld facilities depending on the year of issue.
