Additional information

The 1816 Great Recoinage was one of the most significant monetary reforms in British history, replacing a chaotic mix of worn, clipped, and counterfeit silver with a new milled coinage produced by the newly steam-powered Royal Mint at Tower Hill. The guinea itself had already been retired in 1813, replaced by the sovereign — making this Gibraltar issue a deliberate anachronism, invoking a denomination that was effectively abolished before the recoinage it supposedly commemorates.
