| Obverse description | Right-facing laureate bust of King Charles II, rendered in the second portrait style with a rounded truncation devoid of a forward lock of hair. The effigy is finely engraved in high relief with the king's long flowing hair falling behind the shoulder. The Latin legend encircles the bust, reading CAROLVS·II·DEI·GRATIA, identifying the monarch as Charles II by the Grace of God. The portrait is attributed to the engraver John Roettier and reflects the naturalistic Baroque portraiture characteristic of the Restoration coinage. |
