Charles the Bold inherited Flanders from his father Philip the Good in 1467 and immediately pursued an aggressive monetary policy aimed at unifying coinage across his Burgundian territories. This half guilder belongs to that reforming impulse — an attempt to rationalize a patchwork of local issues into something that could function across the Low Countries, Burgundy, and the territories Charles was actively expanding through warfare and dynastic maneuvering.
Charles died at the Battle of Nancy in January 1477, ending the series abruptly. His body was found three days after the battle, partially eaten by wolves.
