Obverse description Central field features a floriated cross pattée with curved, cusped arms enclosed within a raised inner beaded circle. A royal crown surmounts the top of the inner circle at twelve o'clock. The surrounding legend in Gothic Latin characters reads KAROLUS : DEI : GRA, separated by pellet stops, and runs between the inner beaded border and the irregular outer rim. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of medieval hammered coinage.
