The shield is framed by elaborate baroque foliate mantling. Urban VIII's pontificate — the longest of the seventeenth century at over twenty years — was consumed by the Thirty Years' War and his disastrous involvement in the Castro War of 1641–44, which drained the papal treasury and left the States deeply indebted. The fractional silver issues of this reign were struck at Rome across the full pontificate, accounting for the broad Muntoni reference range spanning four obverse die varieties.
