Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni served as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church during the vacancy following the death of Alexander VIII in February 1691, giving him authority to issue coinage in the interregnum period before Innocent XII's election in July. The Sede Vacante issues of this vacancy are among the more documented of the late seventeenth century, owing partly to the nearly five-month conclave — one of the longer of the period — which gave the mint sufficient time to produce a reasonably complete range of denominations.
