Obverse description The shield-shaped heraldic coat of arms of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi) occupies the central field, depicting an eagle displayed in the upper half and three mounts (hills) in the lower half, rendered in the baroque engraving style characteristic of late seventeenth-century papal coinage. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate acanthus and foliate mantling. Surmounting the shield are the papal tiara and crossed keys, symbolizing the temporal and spiritual authority of the Holy See. The circular legend INNOC. XI · P · M · is arranged around the periphery, reading 'Innocentius XI, Pontifex Maximus.' The coin exhibits a boldly milled or grained edge border framing the design.
