| Additional information |
Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — was elected in 1676 after two inconclusive concelaves and immediately set about reforming Vatican finances, cutting court expenditures and redirecting papal revenue toward the defense of Europe against Ottoman expansion. He bankrolled the Holy League that produced the relief of Vienna in 1683, a military commitment so financially draining that his small silver coinage was issued with tight controls on silver content and weight throughout the mid-1680s.
The undated nature of this emission across the 1685–1688 span was deliberate practice at the Rome mint for subsidiary denominations, not an oversight.
